LIVING BY FAITH

TEXT: Heb. 11:1,  Matt. 17:20,  Lk. 17:6,  Acts 3:6, Matt. 17:20, Rom. 10:17, Hab. 2:4

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Heb. 11:1). And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you (Matt 17:20). And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you (Luke 17:6). Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk (Acts 3:6).

To live by faith is to practically live by the word of God. If you are a Christian, you must know, understand and apply the principles of living by faith on a daily basis. The Word of God says that ‘the just’ that is those who have been saved by faith, those who has been saved by grace in Christ ‘must live by faith’. In the Old Testament, that same word applied in Habakkuk 2:4. For the Christian, living by faith is not an option. You may be a believer and don’t know how to live by faith. This means that you have the possibility of living by something else other than faith. You may be living by sight (2Cor. 5:7). You may be living by culture or tradition. You may also be living by emotion. But God says for we live by faith and not by sight. Others live on prayer and even though prayer is so important, you can’t live by prayer, you can only live by faith. There are those who live by activity but God never say you should live by principles or personality of who you are, but to live by faith. (Matt. 6:30, Matt. 17:20). Your faith in God can give you heaven, money, job, power, fame, prosperity and even your sanity.

What does it mean to live by faith?

The word commands you to live by faith. To live by faith is to live by:

  1. The Word of GodMatt. 4:4, Deut. 8:3, Rom. 10:17, Gal. 12:16, Heb. 6:12, Gal. 3:11, Eph. 2:8, Phil. 1:27 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God (Matt 4:4).

Jesus tells us man shall not live by bread only but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God (Matt. 4:4). The Apostle Paul says I live by the faith of the Son of God. Everything about God is faith whether you want to know about sin, relationship, marriage, business, life or attitude. To live by faith is to live by what the Word of God says. If you live by bread you are going to be disappointed because you would never be satisfied. Bread is important but it’s not as important as the word of God. If seeking bread contradicts God’s Word then you must take the Word of God.

  1. To live by faith is to find the Word that confirms your action Jn. 1, 4:14, Lk. 2:24, 40, Lk. 24:44. But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life (John 4:14).

To live by faith is to know what the Word of God says about something and then believe it enough to live by it. Jesus says ‘all things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope (Rom. 15:4)’. You ought to learn to stick to the word of God and thereby work by faith. There cannot be any other means of living by faith other than merely living by what the word of God says. Individual differences are there in personality. The unifying factor in living by faith is just the word of God.

  1. To live by faith is to believe that the word would workHeb. 4:2, Lk. 17:5-7, Mk. 11:22-23, Lk. 8:48 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith (Mark 11:22-23).

To live by faith is to let all your actions become satisfactorily judged by the word of it. Do you have anything to confirm your actions by 2 or 3 scriptures? If you are living by faith, you must have the complete conviction that what God says would work. In other words, to live by faith is to mix the word you hear, read or study with faith. That means to believe that heaven and earth shall pass away but that word would never go unfulfilled because it has proceeded out of the mouth of God. How much faith do you have in the word of God and how much time do you spend in the Word of God? This would determine the level of faith you have. If you want to have faith in any area of life, you must study the Word of God in that area. Then faith would automatically spring up from your heart. To get faith, you must get the Word. You can’t pray for faith, you can only get faith by knowing and trusting the Word. The disciples asked Jesus to increase their faith since they knew the importance of faith. God told them faith comes by hearing and hearing and to keep hearing the Word of God until it register in your spirit to give you faith.

  1. To live by faith is to live in obedience to God’s wordJames 1:22-25, Isa. 1:19, 1Pet. 1:14, Prov. 25:12 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: (Isa. 1:19)

God says you must be the doer of the Word and not hearers only. This is very important because many people are hearers and not doers. If you want to profit from the Word of God, you live by faith through the process of believing and practicing what the Word of God says. The reason the Word of God doesn’t work for a lot of people is that they do not have enough patience to test the veracity of the Word of God.

You actually begin the Christian journey by the Word of God so you must continue along that path for this is the only way by which you can live and walk by faith. If in your life you have one single evidence that a part of the Word of God has worked for you sometime, then you have the sense to believe that every other part of the Word of God is going to work. It’s impossible to be a believer and not have some spiritual experiences that would endow you to the power in the Word of God. This is why you must continue to believe, obey and practice the Word of God. Then your faith would begin to grow.

  1. To live by faith is to act as if it’s doneRom. 4:17-21, Gen. 17:1-19, Ps. 28:7, Ps. 74:12, Gal. 5:5 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

Living by faith requires you to obey the Word of God and expect that what God has promised is well able to perform. To start with, it’s impossible to divorce the Word of God from God. You see, you cannot remove a person’s word from His person. In practical terms, in real life, a person’s word is actually himself. God’s Word is God. Jesus’ Word is Jesus. For He is the Word that became flesh. Each day you wake up, you must realize the power and importance of the Word of God. To work by faith, you must literarily take the Word of God as if God were speaking to you alone or personally. That is, you must personalize the Word. Then faith would grow and would continue to spring up great surprises in your lives. Henceforth, take the Word of God very seriously. Its higher than the word of man. The power of God’s word is the power of God Himself. Moreover, He has the ultimate ability to make when He says happen.
